Medical Cannabis Basics
A practical guide for Canadians navigating medical cannabis authorization, legal frameworks, and what to expect from treatment.
What Is Medical Cannabis?
Medical cannabis refers to cannabis used for therapeutic purposes under the direction of a healthcare practitioner. In Canada, it is legal when authorized by a physician or nurse practitioner and obtained from a Health Canada-licensed seller.
Getting Your Authorization
To access medical cannabis legally in Canada, you need a medical document (authorization) from a doctor or nurse practitioner. This document specifies your daily amount and duration. You do not need an ACMPR personal production licence to purchase from a licensed seller - your medical document is sufficient.
- Connect with a healthcare practitioner who can assess whether medical cannabis is appropriate for your condition
- Receive a medical document specifying your daily gram equivalent (DGE) and validity period
- Register with a Health Canada-licensed seller (like plcdelivery.com)
- Order your medicine and have it delivered discreetly to your door
Health Canada & Legal Framework
Cannabis for medical purposes is regulated under the Cannabis Act and Cannabis Regulations. Licensed sellers must meet strict quality, security, and record-keeping standards. When you register with a licensed seller, your information is protected and your purchases are compliant with federal law.
Your Rights
You may possess, transport, and use cannabis in amounts consistent with your medical document. You can also travel domestically with your medicine within legal limits. For international travel, check destination country rules.
Common Conditions
Medical cannabis may be considered for conditions including chronic pain, anxiety, PTSD, insomnia, arthritis, multiple sclerosis, cancer-related symptoms, nausea, epilepsy, and others. Your practitioner will assess whether it is appropriate for you based on your history and treatment goals.
